Work in Somers on a watermain project is nearly complete.

The work involves Somers Road and Summit Avenue. It will benefit a total of about 600 residents, as well as some area businesses, the Somers Middle School and the post office, according to project engineer Sherry Johnson.

The contract awarded was for $520,000.

The project began about three weeks ago, according to Eddie Reynolds, of LHC, the contractor performing the work.

Reynolds explained that old cast pipe and lead joints were being replaced by new 8-inch PVC pipe. Fire hydrants were also replaced.

The water main work was expected to be done Friday, May 18.

Reynolds said paving should begin the week of May 21.
