SANDPOINT — A Sandpoint man was arrested after barricading himself inside a residence and threatening its occupants with a knife on Friday.
Joseph “Trey” Raymond Deveney III is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, in addition to misdemeanor counts of malicious injury to property and obstructing law enforcement.
Deveney, 29, was scheduled to make an initial appearance on Monday in Bonner County Magistrate Court. Minutes from the hearing were not immediately available, however.
Sandpoint Police were summoned to the 1100 block of Hickory Street after dispatchers received a report of a family offense, according to a probable cause affidavit. Deveney allegedly threatened the home’s occupants with kitchen knives, one of which was plunged into a wall.
Deveney refused to come outside, prompting Officer Mike Venezuela to reach inside an open doorway and pull Deveney out of the residence, the affidavit said. Deveney briefly resisted being detained, but was taken into custody without further incident, court documents indicate.
The alleged victims told police that Deveney had been drinking, talked of being raped and threatened to kill them, the affidavit said.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for May 30. Aggravated assault is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Bonner County Deputy Prosecutor Katie Murdock added a sentence enhancement because Deveney allegedly used a deadly weapon during the commission of the crime. A conviction on the felony assault charges could add up to 30 years to the sentence.
