Superior's pool closed for the summer due to leaks

The aging Superior pool located in Eva Horning Park is leaking and can no longer hold water. Roger Wasley, Public Works Supervisor, reported at the last Superior Town Hall meeting on May 14 that he tried to fix the leaks but the pool continues to drain itself. There was a brief discussion about it being too late to try and open the pool this season. No final decisions have been made regarding whether the pool will be fixed or replaced.
In the meantime, a committee called, “Pool in the Park” which was previously called, “Superior Swims” has been raising money to help.
“We are working with the town to explore options,” said committee member, Angie Hopwood.
One event held April 22 was the “Walk the Plank” fundraiser. (See Photos, Page A2.) Board member, Tom McCloskey came up with the idea and over 30 people made a donation or got sponsors in order to “walk the plank” in the park. If they raised over $125 they would receive a t-shirt. Phin Cataldo, a Superior fourth grader raised $1,500 and won a gift basket.
“It was amazing he raised that much,” said Hopwood.
In addition to the plank, nearly 100 participants enjoyed a carnival ran with the help of the local Girl Scouts Troop. People also enjoyed face painting by Terry Zylawy, a bake sale and cake walk, raising approximately $7,000. The $50,000 Silver Dollar Bar in Haugan made a substantial contribution and they also donated several boxes of prizes for the carnival.
“We’ve gotten great support from the community and local businesses and have raised a little over $26,000 so far,” said Hopwood.
It is enough money for the committee to complete Phase I of their plans which is to hire a licensed engineer to create a design for the pool. The engineer will be looking at the options of repairing or revamping the current pool or to build a new one. Though everyone wants the pool to be reopened as soon as possible, there is no real timeline, said Hopwood.
The next fundraiser will be June 8 with a BBQ and Bingo at the Mineral County Fairgrounds. People can also make a donation and send it to PO Box 93, Superior, MT 59872.

Mineral County sends tax bill to Forest Service
The Forest Service will be receiving a property tax bill from Mineral County this year. County Commissioners Laurie Johnston, Roman Zylawy and Duane Simons signed the letter March 9 requesting property tax revenue for 2017. The “historic letter” as defined by Rep. Denley Loge, describes the plight Mineral County is facing as options to fund the county have dried up.
Colorado woman dies after vehicle gets stuck
An early evening call received by Mineral County dispatch on Friday, March 17, ended in tragedy. The body of Colorado resident Debra Ann Koziel was found in the Fish Creek area by a search team the following Tuesday afternoon. Her death was determined to be the result of exposure to weather.
No major flooding as snow thaws
“As the ground starts thawing, the rocks start falling,” was a post made on the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page last week. A photo accompanied the post of a big rock which had come down on Mullan Road East near the Big Eddy fishing access in Superior on March 11. “Please be aware of your surroundings and pay attention while driving,” they warned in the post.
