Everyone is invited to the “Fall Jazz Concert” at North Idaho College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. The first jazz concert of the year at NIC, it will feature music performances by Cardinal Vocal Jazz directed by Max Mendez and the NIC Jazz Ensemble directed by Bryan Hannaford.

Cardinal Vocal Jazz will be performing jazz standards like “Day in the Life of a fool,” “Red Top,” and “Miss Brown to You.” Under the direction of Mendez, Cardinal Vocal Jazz from NIC is made of up four versatile singers and a student rhythm section. This group specializes in close harmony and vocal improvisation. Their repertoire includes music of the Great American Songbook, Latin/bossa nova selections, and inventive arrangements of today’s popular music.

The NIC Jazz Ensemble, led by Hannaford, will be performing music written by great modern jazz arrangers. They will be performing the music of Horace Silver and John Clayton.

“You’ll hear Latin-influenced arrangements of Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Red Clay,’ and Phillip Mossman’s “A Song for Horace,” Hannaford said.

The ensemble will also be performing “Speak No Evil” by Wayne Shorter and arranged by Phillip K. Jones II. Jones will be the guest clinician and soloist for February’s annual JazzNIC Festival. Currently, Jones is teaching applied-jazz piano and jazz combos at Texas State University.

“It’s really exciting to be playing a chart by Phil, and to bring him here to Coeur d’Alene in February,” said Hannaford, who was a graduate student at Cleveland State University with Jones.

The concert is free and open to the public.
