SANDPOINT — Bonner County is staying its GOP-themed course.

Bonner County voters elected Cocolalla pastor Steve Bradshaw to the District 1 seat on the commission and opted to keep incumbent Commissioner Dan McDonald installed in the District 3 seat on the board.

Bradshaw finished the general election with 11,363 votes, while his Democratic challenger, Steve Johnson, amassed 6,825 votes, a difference of 4,538 votes.

“I’d like to thank everybody in Bonner County for coming out and voting, regardless of who they voted for, I thank them for being part of the election process. I am going to strive to do as good a job as possible for everybody that lives in Bonner County — Democrat, Republican, independent — regardless. I work for all the people. And just a special thanks for those who helped me, those who supported me, and once again, I just want to really thank the voters for coming out and being a part of it,” Bradshaw said in a statement following his victory.

In the closely fought District 3 contest, meanwhile, McDonald crossed the finish line early Wednesday morning with 10,810 votes, beating Democrat challenger Steve Lockwood, who finished the tally with 7,442 votes — a difference of 3,368 votes.

“I want to thank the voters of Bonner County for once again putting their faith and trust in me. I will continue to work for all of you to create more responsible, responsive and transparent local government. I will continue to welcome calls and comments from all Bonner County residents as I always have in the past. I also want to thank all those on my campaign team and volunteers for their tireless efforts and hard work on my behalf. I couldn’t have done it without them,” McDonald said in a statement.

Lockwood was also grateful for the support he received during the election cycle.

“I really appreciate all my supporters who worked on the campaign,” Lockwood said.

In the most lopsided result in contested county races, Republican Donna Gow picked up 13,171 votes to succeed Republican Jerry Clemons as the county’s assessor. Independent Wendel Bergman collected 3,711 votes, a difference of 9,460 votes.

Of the 25,842 registered voters in Bonner County, 18,853 people cast ballots on Tuesday, resulting in a voter turnout of 73 percent, according to the Bonner County Clerk’s Office.

Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale and his staff are still parsing through election-day registrations, although they suspect they are comparable to registrations during the 2016 presidential election cycle.

“It was huge,” Rosedale said on Wednesday.

Rosedale said 21,856 ballots were cast in the last presidential election.
