Charlo takes fourth at Western C Divisional, stung by 'Stangs
John Heglie Special For Leader | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 years, 4 months AGO
In the opening round at the Western C Divisional Tournament, the Charlo Lady Vikings rallied from a tightly-contested two-set deficit to take the third set from the then undefeated Lady Mustangs of Ennis. The fourth set likewise extended into the 20s for both squads, but the Mustangs didn’t horse around at the end as they pulled out the deciding set for a 3-1 match win.
The loss relegated Charlo to the consolation rounds, but the Lady Vikings showed both resolve as well as grit as they reeled off a pair of wins as they clipped the wings of the 13C Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks in straight sets, and tethered the talons of the 12C Lady Falcons of Twin Bridges 3-1 that included a third set that dipped into extras.
The pair of wins advanced the Lady Vikings into the fourth-place match against their first round opponent Ennis, who had by now sustained their lone loss of the season.
Charlo had hoped to add to their blemish, but the Lady Mustangs would have none of it as they swept the Lady Vikings in straight set this time around. Contending against a previously undefeated team requires a full tank of gas for optimal performance and the fuel tank for Charlo was running low — if not on fumes — after two previous matches as they tried to advance into the trophy hardware rounds of Saturday.
Despite the loss, first-year head coach Rhondell Volinkaty aptly summarized her assessment of both the season as well as the tournament when she said, “They left every ounce of their heart on the court to the very end of the last game of the last match of the season … It was a phenomenal year.”

Pirate plaque preference Burger-larized by Bulldogs
At Smith Fields in Whitefish for the 2018 State A boys soccer championship, the Polson Pirates and the Northern A conference champion Bulldogs would put on quite a show in an energetic quest to claim the coveted state A crown last Saturday. This would be just the third foray to the championship match in the history of the Pirate boys’ soccer program, who hoped that the idiomatic expression “third time’s a charm” would play out in Polson’s favor.
Scarlets have new coach; Mission returns four starters
The 2018-19 rendition of the Arlee Scarlets have to be rated as within the scope of a reloading phase given that the lion’s share of their offensive firepower returns along with further infusion from the transfer of Louetta Conko-Camel.
