MOSES LAKE — David Garza (Twinkie), organizer of the 2018 food drive sponsored by the Road Brother Motorcycle Club, was talking to a passerby when a car drove up and stopped.
“I don't have any cans, but I do have some money,” the woman said, handing over some cash. The Road Brothers were hanging out along the sidewalk on Stratford Road Saturday, collecting food and raising money for local people in need during the holiday season.
This is the sixth year Road Brother has held a food drive. “It all started with what can we do to help out,” Garza said.
“We didn't know what we were getting into, but we had so much fun, we just kept doing it.” The first year they collected enough food and money to help four families; the second year they doubled that, and it's grown over time, he said. In 2017 the club collected enough to provide Thanksgiving dinner to 17 families. “We got a ton of community support last year.”
And there's a target for 2018. “Our goal is to hit that 20 (family) mark,” he said.
“We strive every year to get bigger and better.” And it doesn't stop with raising money and food – the Road Brother members make a ride of it on delivery day. “We go door to door (of receiving families) and deliver our boxes,” Garza said.
Road Brother is a “family-oriented motorcycle club,” a bunch of guys and ladies who just like to ride motorbikes, he said. The club has set up a Facebook group page for its 2018 food drive, and will accept donations.

Outgoing Othello mayor says time in office taught some lessons
OTHELLO — Outgoing Othello Mayor Shawn Logan said his time in office has reinforced some things he already knew and taught him some new lessons, too. “Othello has nice people in it. Really good people. And we really are a family-friendly, youth sports, agriculture, largely Hispanic community,” he said. “I got to know my community better. And the other thing that I was learning is that this town has a lot of kids in it.” Logan was defeated earlier this year in a bid for his fourth term as mayor. He was first elected to the mayor’s job in 2014. Logan said his motivation was to help Othello grow and improve, and that continued to be his focus. The question, he said, was how to do it.

Winter temperatures to arrive and stay for a while
MOSES LAKE — All those mild days in November and December? All those 50-degree afternoons? Well, as people may have noticed, that late fall weather is going away, at least for the time being. Joey Clevenger, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Spokane, said weather patterns are starting to push cold air into Eastern and Central Washington.
