Buoys to be installed off Memaloose

EAST HOPE — No-wake zone buoys are coming to Memaloose Island.
Bonner County commissioners unanimously agreed to place six of the buoys off the Lake Pend Oreille island on Tuesday. The buoys, which are slated to cost $1,500 were donated to the county by resident Todd Wendle, commissioners said.
“I appreciate that this resident has decided to provide those buoys because they do cost and that’s an expense that we don’t have to bear,” Commission Chairman Glen Bailey said on Tuesday.
The county will seek permit approval for the buoys through the Idaho Department of Lands.
“The locations for the buoys have been approved by the Waterways Advisory Committee,” said James Shannon, director of Bonner County Waterways & Parks.
The buoys are slated for installation this spring.
Bonner County has also received private funding for buoys on the Pend Oreille River to aid in the Avoid the Core/Ride the Shore campaign, which counsels boaters to concentrate wake-producing activities in the main body of the lake in order to limit shoreline impacts on the river.
The commission has welcomed private contributions to the dilemma of damaging boat wakes on the river, although some riverfront residents have criticized the assistance because it effectively kept no-wake zone regulations from being enhanced.
