SANDPOINT — A Middleton man is pleading guilty to vandalizing City Hall and leading law enforcement on a pursuit in separate incidents last fall.
James Robert Kerrigan entered the pleas during a hearing in 1st District Court on Nov. 9, court records show. He was released on his own recognizance after entering the pleas.
A sentencing hearing in the case is set for Feb. 11.
Kerrigan, 40, was accused of damaging a wall-mounted water main at the Sandpoint Police Department on Sept. 15, which flooded offices and caused more than $1,000 in damages, which elevated a malicious injury to property charge from a misdemeanor to a felony. Kerrigan turned up at the police department to report damaging a restroom at Safeway, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The day after the episode at City Hall, Kerrigan allegedly led a Bonner County sheriff’s deputy on a pursuit on U.S. Highway 95 in a cab-over recreational vehicle. The RV was reportedly being driven recklessly on Upper Pack River Road, according to court documents.
Kerrigan failed to yield to the officer’s lights and siren and crashed into traffic waiting on a traffic signal at Schweitzer Cutoff Road, injuring himself and another motorist, the affidavit said.
After being taken into custody, Kerrigan allegedly tried to bite a deputy’s leg and spit water he siphoned from a toilet into the deputy’s face, resulting in felony charges of battery on a law officer and propelling bodily fluid at a law officer.
In exchange for guilty pleas to the felony vandalism and eluding charges, the felony battery and propelling charges were dismissed, court records show.
Kerrigan blamed the incident at Safeway on a manic episode, according to court documents.
