SANDPOINT — Consistently cold temperatures and elbow grease from the mountain operations team is allowing Schweitzer Mountain Resort to open for limited operations on Friday.

The resort will be running its Basin Express Quad chairlift, which will offer skiers and snowboarders access to the Midway trail.

“We have an amazing crew who understand how to maximize our snowmaking system at Schweitzer and thanks to them, we’ve been able to make enough snow to get this season started,” said Marketing Manager Dig Chrismer. “Schweitzer’s investment in snow making really helps when the temps are right but we just aren’t getting the precipitation we need. With more natural snow in the forecast for this week, the combination of manmade and natural snow will be perfect for those warm up laps on Midway this weekend.”

The resort will remain open on Saturday and Sunday. It’s slated to reopen for the season on Nov. 30, weather permitting.

“I know a lot of people are anxious to get out there. It will be nice to get out and make some turns and get your ski legs,” Chrismer said.

The resort’s shuttles will be operating under the weekend bus schedule and those who don’t have unlimited-access ski passes will be welcomed free of charge.

“Sunday through Friday pass holders are welcome to ski on Saturday,” said Chrismer.

Chrismer said precipitation earlier in the month clung to the resort’s upper flanks, although man-made snow is carrying the day at lower elevations for the time being.

“The forecast is looking very favorable to get some snow through Thursday and Friday,” Chrismer added.

The resort’s snow-making capabilities have enabled the resort to open for six consecutive Thanksgiving holidays, even when Mother Nature has been stingy with the precipitation.

“It’s nice to have that little guarantee,” said Chrismer.

The resort will be keeping a close eye on the weather and will open more lifts and terrain as conditions allow.

“Till then, we really hope our Schweitzer friends and fans will enjoy getting the chance to make some turns while getting inspired for the rest of the season,” said Chrismer.
