LONG BEACH, Calif. — Mikayla Ferentz scored 28 of her game-high 30 points in the first half for Idaho, which came up short to in-state rival Boise State 91-85 in the Beach Classic on Friday.

Ellie Woerner scored a career-high 23 points and hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 remaining to give Boise State (4-1) an 80-75 lead. Idaho outscored Boise State 30-20 to take a 47-44 lead at halftime after trailing 34-21 early in the second quarter.

“It was a great basketball game that came down to the final minute,” Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. “I’m proud of the way our team battled all night. We had some breakdowns in that last minute, but we will learn for those and get better. Congratulations to Boise State on a hard-fought victory.”

Idaho (2-2) plays tournament host Long Beach State today at 4 p.m.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Zykera Rice scored 16 points as Gonzaga (5-1) defeated Rutgers (4-2) in the consolation semifinals of the inaugural Vancouver Showcase at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Chandler Smith and Katie Campbell scored eight points each for the Bulldogs, who claimed a 36-26 advantage on the glass and outscored the Scarlet Knights 36-19 in the second half.

Melody Kempton, a freshman from Post Falls High, had five points and three rebounds in 17 minutes for Gonzaga. Kempton’s layup with seven seconds remaining tied the game 21-all heading into halftime.

Rutgers was led by Victoria Harris with 12 points. Charise Wilson chipped in 10.

The Bulldogs will play Western Kentucky for fifth place today at 1:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Channon Fluker had 24 points and 14 rebounds as the Matadors (2-3) beat the Cougars (1-4) in the first round of the Warner Center Marriot Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at the Madadome.

Chanelle Molina had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Cougars. Alexys Swedlund added 13 points, Borislava Hristova 12 for WSU.

The Cougars take on Jacksonville State in the consolation game today at 3:30 p.m.
