Giving Trees brighten Christmas season

SANDPOINT — If you want to spread some boots-on-the-ground goodwill this Christmas, you don’t have to walk any further than the Bonner County Courthouse or the county Administration Building.
For the eighth consecutive year, the Association of Bonner County Employees has erected giving trees at the courthouse and admin building. The trees are adorned with tags with specific gift requests placed by organizations and nonprofits who serve the disabled, children in foster care and others in need.
Donors select a tag from the trees, fulfill the gift request, wrap the item and affix the tag to the gift.
Bonner County Deputy Recorder Randi Flaherty began the tradition after seeing a need in the community and a way to make somebody else’s Christmas season a bit brighter.
“What better way to do that than starting a giving tree?” Flaherty said.
ABCE solicits requests from organizations in October and puts up the trees up in the lead-up to the Black Friday shopping day. Gifts are distributed in advance of Christmas and Bonner County employees make donations to fulfill gift requests that have not been selected.
The deadline to submit a wrapped gift is Monday, Dec. 17.
