Zema, Sturgis land LPOIC derby wins

SANDPOINT — The final weekend saw several lead changes as anglers hit the lake to try their luck in the as the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s annual K&K Derby.
As the final lines were pulled in and the boats put away, it was Moose Zema in the top spot for adult rainbow with a 23.50-pound, 36-inch lake trout and Becky Sturgis claiming the top spot in the adult mackinaw divsion with a 22.6-pound, 36-inch fish.
The derby wrapped up at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Result aren’t official until fish verification is completed on Tuesday evening.
Moose Zema took top spot in the rainbow division on Tuesday and never look back despite several strong challenges from the region’s anglers. Catching their way onto the leaderboard Saturday were Denton McGlothlin with a 22.48-pound, 36-inch rainbow for second place and Aaron Nelson with a 21.88-pound, 35/14-inch rainbow to claim second. Julie Williams ended the derby with fourth-place honors with a 20.78-pound, 34-inch rainbow she caught near the start of the derby.
Becky Sturgis took over the top spot in the derby with her 22.6-pound mack on Saturday and didn’t look back. Finishing second in the adult mackinaw division was John Cosolito, who pulled in a 20.12-pounder, followed by Brad Sturgis with a 17.74-pound, 37-inch mackinaw for third-place honors. Art Webb finished fourth with a 17.10-pound mackinaw measuring 37 inches, Gale Belgarde Sr. was fifth with a 16-24-pound, 34-inch fish. In sixth is Gary Thompson with a 6.24-pound, 26 1/4-inch fish; seventh is Gale Belgarde Jr. with a 3.52-pound, 22-inch mack; eighth-place honors were claimed by Charles Thompson with a 4.46-pound, 23-inch fish; Bert Dennett ended in ninth-place with a 4.27-pound, 23-inch mack, followed by William Ament, who ended the derby with a 4.22-pound 24 1/2-inch mackinaw..
In the junior rainbow division, it was Brandon Reeves, who claimed top honors with an 18.66-pound, 35-inch lake trout, followed by Magnus Hansson in second with a 17.77-pound, 33-inch rainbow and, in third, was Carson Laybourne with a 14.54-pound, 31 1/2 inch fish. In the junior mackinaw division, Magnus Hansson took top honors with a 4.78-pound, 24-inch mack.
In the Youth A division, Daisy McCorkle took top honors on Saturday with a 10.94-pound rainbow that measured 28 1/2 inches. Carly Laybourne ended the derby in second with a 16.12-pound, 34 1/2-inch mackinaw, with Londyn Steckman with a 9.5-pound, 27 3/4-inch rainbow taking third-place honors.
In the Youth B standings, taking top honors was Clare Belgarde with a 16.12-pound, 34 1/2-inch mackinaw, followed by Gracie Belgarde, with a 16.04-pound, 34-inch mackinaw, followed by Lyla Shelton in the third with a 13.16-pound, 30-inch rainbow.
