After closing her shop in Superior several years ago, Becky Magone is back. She reopened her barbershop, Becky’s Superior Cuts and Emporium. It’s located in the old post office at 101 ½ River Street. In the space that used to be the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce office. Becky has been cutting hair for 43 years and 30 of those had been in Superior.

Now that the word is out, more of her old clients are starting to walk through the door, happy that she has returned to her roots. Speaking of roots, she only does haircuts, no coloring or perms and is currently only open on Mondays and Fridays. She hopes to soon be open on Thursday as well. However, her shop in Missoula, also called Becky’s Superior Cuts, located at 2141 South Avenue West, is open Tuesday through Thursday. Most of her clientele travels south for the winter and so she’s planning on cutting back Thursday in Missoula and work those hours in Superior.

It’s nice for her to be back in Superior, close to her husband, Dale, who was recently re-elected as justice of the peace for Mineral County. The Magones have always been close both professionally and personally. They met in grade school, dated in high school and have been married for 43 years, celebrating their anniversary on Thanksgiving this year.

“I always say I married my best friend,” she said.

Her shop has one barber chair, and the “emporium” portion is filling up with artwork, crafts, antiques and second hand items. “Eventually, I hope to have sandwiches,” she said. “I would really like to see Superior get back on the map.”

Becky should know what’s she’s talking about since she grew up here and is “related to half the county.” Her maiden name is Simpkins, a family with need Mineral County roots, equal to the Magone’s, who’s family also goes back several decades. When the couple lived in Missoula, she was the first student to register at the newly formed Montana Barber College. Dale was attending classes as the University of Montana and within a short period of time, joined his wife in getting his barber’s certificate.

From there, they cut hair side-by-side at their shop until Dale was elected to the court. “It’s nice because Dale can come down here on his lunch hour and visit,” she said. The courthouse is just down the street from her shop, on the other side of the bridge. The other shops the Magones had was next to the Mineral Pharmacy, and around the corner near Castle’s market.

They moved back to Lozeau to help her out her dad before he passed away a few years ago. Now, she would like to get back to Superior full-time and avoid the drive into Missoula, “especially in the winter when the weather is bad,” she said.

For now, her shingle is out two days a week, and walk-ins are welcome since she is not taking appointments. Or people can stop in and peruse her growing emporium.
