PRIEST RIVER — A Bonner County man is being arraigned on Friday for allegedly stealing a bearded dragon reptile from 4 Paws Pet Supply last summer.
Kurtis William Barker-Hayden is charged with misdemeanor theft.
Barker-Hayden was implicated in the Aug. 22 theft after operators of the pet store combed through social media and identified a young woman who had put up a Facebook post of a bearded dragon with a caption which read “new pet,” according to a Bonner County sheriff deputy’s probable cause affidavit. The woman was confronted about the lizard theft and she admitted to being present during the incident and told authorities that Barker-Hayden committed the theft.
Barker-Hayden, 19, admitted taking the reptile and turned it over to the deputy a day after the theft, according to court documents. Barker-Hayden said he did not enter the store intending to commit a theft and told a deputy the theft was an impulsive act, the affidavit said.
Native to Australia, bearded dragons will darken the underside of their throat if stress or confronted by a rival. They are regarded as good pets because of their hardiness and relatively easy care in comparison to other reptiles. Bearded dragons can sell for up to $200, according to online sellers.
Barker-Hayden is on probation for a misdemeanor theft that he admitted committing in January, Idaho iCourt records indicate.
