From the snow to the showdown

In 1992, the Apple Cup was played in the snow in Pullman.

It was considered Cougar weather, and an inspired Washington State team led by Drew Bledsoe throttled the Washington Huskies 42-23.

Last Friday, the Apple Cup was played in the snow in Pullman.

But apparently, snow is now considered Husky weather (Mush! and all that), and U-Dub ran over WSU 28-15, once again denying the Cougs the Pac-12 North title.

The Huskies play Utah in the conference title game on Friday; WSU finds out Sunday which bowl it is headed to.

Kudos to young Jason, who picked the Huskies when nearly everyone else figured the Cougars were going to capitalize on the situation and rub the Huskies’ faces in the snow.

As for the picks, I went 1-1 last week (Boise State beat Utah State in the other game), and am 36-8 on college picks, 84-27 overall. Jason went 2-0 and is 34-10 on college picks, 80-31 overall.

This week, Eastern Washington enters the FCS playoffs, and the Eagles could be playing for awhile.

COLLEGE

Nicholls State (9-3) at Eastern Washington (9-2)

Saturday, 2 p.m.

NELKE: The visiting Colonels from Thibodaux, La., and the Southland Conference, rolled up 606 yards of offense in beating visiting San Diego 49-30 last week in their playoff opener. EWU had a bye last week and, with a week to rest up, has a chance to say bye-bye to Nicholls State.

EWU, 49-30

ELLIOTT: It’s possible that this game winds up being a shootout. If that is the case, I’m taking the Eags.

EWU, 38-28

Fresno State (10-2) at Boise State (10-2)

Saturday, 4:45 p.m.

NELKE: The Broncos are trying to make it 3 for 3 in Mountain West title games, all at home. They beat Fresno State in their first two conference title games as well.

BSU, 31-21

ELLIOTT: Fans all saw what happened the last time these two played in Boise on Nov. 10, when the officials gave the Broncos a favorable first down. Hard to pick against the host school in a close one again.

Fresno State, 27-24
