He grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1964. Shortly after graduation he moved to Bremerton, Wash., where he served an apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He graduated with honors with the apprentice class of 1968.

In July 1965 he married Judy (Finley) Christenson in Sandpoint with whom he had three children. He went on to have a career as a naval architecture technician at PSNS, from which he retired in 2001 after 36 years of service.

He was active in his children’s lives. In addition to coaching, he enjoyed hiking, camping, and playing golf. He was most happy when working in his garden, his woodshop or enjoying the outdoors.
