Short on numbers but big on enthusiasm

For a second year the “Run for the Pool” was held in Superior on Saturday, Sept. 29. Approximately 40 runners participated this year, down from nearly 100 last year. There were some conflicting events over the weekend, including a junior high football game and a local wedding.
Event planner Angie Hopwood said they moved the run up a week in the hopes of better weather since it had rained last year. Though there wasn’t any rain this year, temperatures were cool and skies were overcast as runners got ready for the race. There were young and old racers going head-to-head with even a few dogs in the mix.
Runners were enthusiastic as they started down the road just east of River Street next to the Old School. From there they ran down Spruce Street, looped around Eva Horning Park, through the Superior School parking lot and back to the starting line to make up the 5K run.
With a time of 29:24, 11-year-old Phin Cataldo came in first place, with Dan Power (of adult age) just behind him. Lanie Crabb, 13, came in third place with 29:34. All runners received a T-shirt and a Frisbee for participating.
ON THE other side of the Old School is the location where the old town pool was located. Right in the parking lot in front of Jackie’s Flowers, and if people look closely, tiles from that old pool can still be found. It was built in 1936 and closed in 1960 with a new pool opened in Eva Horning Park in 1961.
That pool showed its age last year and no longer holds water due to leaking pipes. It didn’t open over the summer and was sorely missed by local kids and adults alike. So far, $31,000 has been raised for the new pool, enough to hire an architect. Hopwood said they will be submitting requests for proposals and from there they will get a realistic cost for the new pool once plans are drawn up.
The group is also launching a new website, Pool in the Park, in addition to their Facebook page, which has all the latest news and updates.
