I’m a registered Republican. That being said, I often don’t vote party lines. When there are particular issues and/or positions that I’m undecided about I try to get informed. I listen to my friends of both parties, I research on the internet, I read newspapers and I weigh the facts and make my own decisions. I’d like to briefly state the reasons I am supporting the Medicaid Expansion Initiative, Proposition 2.
There are roughly 62,000 people in Idaho making less than $17,000/year who fall in the “gap.” These are working people who work at jobs not providing health insurance and they can’t afford to buy their own. Proposition 2 will bring nearly $400 million in federal funding back to Idaho. Research shows that expansion has positively impacted coverage, access to care and affordability in participating states. It will also save taxpayers, hospitals, and clinics from paying for the uninsured, adding to economic benefits for our state and providers.
National research shows no significant increases in spending from state funds, nor have education, transportation, or other programs been negatively impacted in Medicaid expansion states. On the contrary, studies show that states electing to receive funds for Medicaid expansion have had budget savings, revenue gains, and overall economic growth.
I believe Proposition 2 is a nonpartisan initiative and I’m supporting it because it’s the right thing to do.
