Timberlake roars into state

SPIRIT LAKE — McKeeley Tonkin totaled 26 assists, 11 digs and two kills as the top-seeded and host Timberlake Tigers swept the third-seeded Kellogg Wildcats 25-18, 25-12, 25-21 in the championship match of the 3A District 1 volleyball tournament Thursday night.
Timberlake won its third district title in four years. The Tigers also won in 2015 and ’16.
Timberlake (24-9) advances to state Oct. 26-27 at Mountain View High in Meridian. The Tigers open Oct. 26 at 8 a.m. PDT vs. the winner of a state play-in match.
Kellogg will travel to No. 2 seed Priest River tonight at 6 in the second-place, winner-to-state match. Priest River eliminated Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy earlier Thursday.
Ashlyn Mallet added 11 digs and eight kills for Timberlake, Kenzie Dean 10 digs and seven kills, Becca Malloy eight digs and six aces, Brooke Jessen six kills, two blocks and an ace.
For Kellogg, Cierra Brandt had 13 kills, Jaron Figueroa 17 assists, Hailey Cheney four blocks and an ace, Emma Bristow one ace.

COEUR d’ALENE — Lauren Phillips and Kelly Horning came up big as the host Vikings eliminated the Bengals 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 26-24 in the loser-out, second-place match of the 5A Region 1 tournament.
Phillips finished with 21 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, five aces and two blocks for Coeur d’Alene (17-9), and Horning had 16 kills, 13 digs, three aces and two blocks.
Coeur d’Alene will play Eagle, the fifth-place finisher from the District 3 tournament, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grangeville in a state play-in match.
Taylin Rowley had 16 assists for the Vikings, Sarah Wilkey 13 kills, Liliana Hare three blocks.
“I thought our blocking was really key for us tonight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We did a good job keeping the ball on their side of the net.”

Orofino wins 2A
district tourney
GENESEE — The Maniacs beat the St. Maries Lumberjacks twice on Wednesday, 25-16, 15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12 in the first match and then 25-10, 25-23, 25-19 in the second, to win the 2A District 1-2 tourney.
Orofino (14-4) captured the district’s lone berth to the state tournament, Oct. 26-27 at Capital High in Boise.
St. Maries, which shared the Central Idaho League title with Orofino after the teams split their two league meetings, finished 15-16.
