SANDPOINT — A racist robocall targeting a gubernatorial candidate in Florida is being linked back to a local white supremacist.

Voters in Florida reported receiving a robocall on Tuesday against Florida Democratic governor candidate Andrew Gillum.

Audio of the call published by the Huffington Post has an actor impersonating Gillum speaks in an exaggerated minstrel dialect.

“Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida,” the caller says in the call.

The ad traffics heavily in racial stereotypes of black people and claims Jewish people are voting for him because they have a history of putting African Americans in charge of white people.

A disclaimer at the end of the ad indicates that it was paid for by Road to Power, a white supremacist website and podcast based in Sandpoint.

The man behind the site and podcast is Scott D. Rhodes, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Rhodes was caught distributing white supremacist literature at Sandpoint High School in 2017 and his site has been linked to other racist robocalls.

“The calls, which have targeted communities in California, Idaho, Iowa, Florida and Pennsylvania, seek to exploit current events by disseminating vile, offensive commentary. Robocalls are a relatively low-cost and easy means of communicating hate and allow callers to mask their identity while reaching a wide audience,” ADL said in a post published to the group’s blog on Tuesday.

Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter and Boise Mayor David Bieter issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the latest robocall.

“Idahoans fought too long and hard against ignorant, disgusting bigotry like this to allow it to ever gain a foothold again in this great state. No matter who spews it or who is targeted, condemnation against this kind of poisonous propaganda cannot be too swift or vigorous. We call on all Idahoans and all Americans to stand against anyone who espouses such viewpoints. This kind of bigotry will not be tolerated in Idaho,” the joint statement said.
