SMELTERVILLE – The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reports that an officer/deputy involved shooting occurred early Monday morning in Smelterville.

At approximately 12:19 a.m, two Deputies responded to a suspicious persons call in the area of Washington and F Streets.

It was believed that an individual was breaking into parked vehicles next to the old Sand Motel.

During the initial investigation, gun fire was exchanged, which led to one man being transported to Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg for treatment.

The injured man was later sent to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene, where he is reportedly in stable condition.

“No law enforcement personnel were injured during this critical incident,” SCSO stated in a news release.

The identities of the injured suspect or the involved Deputy/Officer are unknown at this time.

A multiagency investigation, headed by Idaho State Police, was carried out Monday morning next to the Sands Motel. Law enforcement could also be seen interviewing witnesses throughout the morning in town.

Shoshone County Sheriff Mike Gunderson, who was on scene with Deputy Prosecutor Benjamin Allen at the time, told the News-Press that more information will be released at a later time.

The News-Press will continue to follow this developing story.
