NEIGHBORHOODS: Worth preserving

Is it true that the grand house on Eighth and Sherman is slated for the wrecking ball?

It is not surprising as the character of our charming historical town is vanishing — I suppose in the names of progress and modernity. Historical downtown buildings have additions and subtractions, and only a couple have been historically restored.

The character and architectural integrity of our charming neighborhoods are challenged by replacements/additions of large houses that dwarf the surrounding homes and leave little open space. One bright note: the City Council recently confirmed concerns of neighbors regarding a proposed development which, it appeared, they found incompatible.

I urge you to drive through the historical heart of town, our established neighborhoods, and look at the variety of architectural designs and beautiful established trees. Perhaps it will inspire in you an understanding of the importance of preservation of our neighborhoods.
