YAKIMA - The Royal girls showed why pack time is everything in cross country, finishing second at the SCAC district meet on Apple Ridge Golf Course in Yakima.

Wahluke’s Yerik Arellano (16 minutes, 17.60 seconds) ran hard with the lead pack over the 3.2-mile course, finishing fifth in the 51-runner field.

But it was the Knights that were able to run together to finish second in the team standings. Abby Delay led the way with an eighth place finish (20:30.70). The Royal grouping made the difference with Sydney Gilbert (20:31.00) finishing ninth, filled in with Aliyah Finch (21:06.00), Sydney Burke (21:17.00), Ana Villafana (21:43.90) and Abby Wood (21:44.00) placing 11-13-14-15, respectively.

Karen Arellano (21:47.50) was the second Wahluke Warrior across, placing 17th.

In the boys race, Wahluke’s Yerik Arellano (16:17.60) was right there in the mix. Connell sophomore Dallin Price (15:43.40) held off Nate Mendoza (15:44.10) of Zillah to defeat the 75-runner field, but Yerik Arellano was 30 seconds behind the winning time in a quality race. Teammate Tanu Buck (16:42.80) was 15th.

Royal’s Rudy Flores led the Knights with a 11th place finish in 16:38.80. Fernando Alvarado (16:44.10) was 17th overall.
