SANDPOINT — A Sagle woman accused of embezzling money from a Sandpoint midwifery clinic pleaded not guilty on Monday to grand theft.

Samantha Sue Wasylko’s plea sets the table for a four-day jury trial in 1st District Court in February 2019. Wasylko is free on her own recognizance while the case is pending.

Wasylko, 42, faces a one- to 20-year sentence if convicted of the felony offense.

Wasylko is accused of pocketing cash receipts at Pend Oreille Midwifery, where she once served as office manager. The business’s corporate secretary testified at a preliminary hearing in July that the company’s accountant discovered irregularities in financial statements in 2015. Wasylko was to meet with company officials to discuss the matter, but she didn’t show up for the meeting and never returned to work.

More than $10,000 in cash payments were received by the clinic and never deposited, according to court documents. Wasylko is accused of using her access to the clinic’s accounting software to delete notations of cash receipts.

There was no eyewitness to the thefts, although Judge Justin Julian found there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial because only a limited amount of people had access to the clinic’s accounting software.

Wasylko invoked her right to remain silent during the preliminary hearing.
