SANDPOINT — A Blanchard woman was arrested in Washington state early Thursday morning after an Amber alert was issued for her 11-year-old son.

Spokane television station KXLY reports that Theresa Marlene Shanholtzer was apprehended at an Omak hotel and her son was found safe.

Idaho State Police said the boy is a ward of the state and was released for visitation with his mother, who failed to return the child at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Law enforcement believed the child was in danger, according to the America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response alert.

Shanholtzer, 51, was identified as a suspect in the Amber alert, as was a 26-year-old North Idaho man. The suspect vehicle was a 2001 Chevrolet Lumina sedan with Bonner County license plates.

KXLY reported that authorities in Kootenai County believed the boy had been kidnapped by his mother and the other suspect. They were reportedly last seen at a Walmart in Hayden.

Police officials in Omak advised Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies that the suspect vehicle was found at a local hotel, according to the KXLY report. The boy was found safe at 3:10 a.m. and the TV station reports that Shanholtzer is being held at the Okanogan County Jail with charges pending.

It was not clear on Thursday if Shanholtzer’s alleged accomplice was arrested or is also facing charges.

The Amber alert system, which issues notifications of across all forms media and communication, is named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old who was abducted and killed in Arlington, Texas, in 1996.
