COEUR d’ALENE — The process took a huge step forward for the Lake City High football team in Friday’s home game against Ferris of Spokane.

Ferris just had a few more steps than the Timberwolves in the nonleague game.

Zane Lettau scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:57 remaining in the game — his second score of the fourth quarter — to pull Lake City within two points, but Ferris tailback Brandon Trickler scored on the ensuing possession to put the game out of reach in a 31-22 nonleague win.

“We had a good week of practice,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “Honestly, right now we’re pretty thin and had some guys get banged up tonight. But we had some guys step up. They never quit and just kept fighting.”

Ferris (2-0) took an early lead, only to have Lake City move in front on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Chris Irvin to Anthony Chavez. But Brock Bozett took the ensuing kickoff back 82 yards to give Ferris a 10-8 lead.

“We always talk about momentum and they’re going to grab it at some point in the game,” Ferris coach Tom Yearout said. “But we had a senior step up and we blocked that play really well.”

Ferris finished with 207 yards rushing, led by Trickler with 91 yards and one touchdown.

Ferris finished the game with a turnover, Saxon cornerback Eric Mast intercepting a deflected pass with 1:31 remaining.

“I’m so proud of them,” Fulp said. “Eventually, those plays are going to turn for us. We’ll return a kick for a touchdown, but right now, the ball isn’t bouncing our way. We kind of had some bad penalties and got in our own way, but we’re young and they’re getting better. I’m proud of them. They fight. It’s going to happen soon.”

Lettau finished with 99 yards for Lake City (0-3), which travels to Lakeland next Friday.

“Zane ran hard tonight,” Fulp said. “He really ran hard tonight.”

Lettau’s second touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Kevin Frades on the 35-yard line for Lake City.

“It’s a process,” Fulp said. “The little things are happening in the right order. They’re not happening as fast as some would like, but we’ll get there.”

“They had a big, big strong running back (Lettau) that caused us some problems,” Yearout said. “And they’ve improved tremendously since Week 2. I thought Lake City played extremely hard and coach Fulp’s team made a huge step forward.”

Ferris faces Mead next Friday.
