SANDPOINT — After he was accidentally shot in the face this summer, the family of 13-year-old Jade Harlow recently got some good news as the youth was named the 2018 Sam's Produce benefit recipient.

As such, Sam's Produce in Sagle will host its seventh annual benefit barbecue on Sept. 15 to raise funds for Jade and his family.

“Since the moment of impact on June 22, Jade has made a miraculous recovery given such gut-wrenching circumstances,” said his mother, Rebecca Linck, in a message to the Daily Bee. “In the next month he will undergo the reconstruction of his skull. Our family has endured mental, physical and emotional traumas. It is only with God’s grace and mercy that we will get through it all.”

After reportedly being shot by another youth on June 22, Jade was flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where his eyes were removed, leaving him permanently blind. He is now home, awaiting further surgeries, dental, physical and occupational therapies, said Diana Bynum with Sam's Produce. While the injuries to his face were extensive, he appears to have suffered no mental brain damage, she said.

Sam's Produce and Wood's Meats will supply the food for the free barbecue, including hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, watermelon, cantaloupe and other produce carried by Sam's.

There will be live music, an antique car show and a fire truck from Selkirk Fire, Rescue and EMS’ Sagle station. Bynum said they are looking for raffle donations, silent auction items and monetary donations.

"That is the only thing that people would be paying for," Bynum said. "... I know it's short notice, but we really want to have a good turnout this year."

The benefit barbecue will be held from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Sam's Produce, next to the Sagle Conoco.
