CONNOR VANDERWEYST | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 years, 2 months AGO
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake proved to be over-matched in a 41-16 loss to No. 7 Mt. Spokane.
The Wildcats opened up a 34-2 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Chiefs were provided a glimpse into the future as junior defensive back Tristan Queen intercepted Mt. Spokane quarterback Brady Hill on the Wildcats’ first possession. More, Queen’s teammate in the defensive backfield sophomore Lerenz Thomas returned a partially blocked punt for a touchdown in the third quarter.
However, Mt. Spokane largely lived up to the bill as a top 10 team in Class 3A. Wildcat running back Kannon Katzer scored from five yards out in the first quarter and later caught a swing pass and rumbled 62 yards for another touchdown later in the first half. Quentin Ayers added two rushing touchdowns for Mt. Spokane.
The inexperienced Chiefs had troubled adjusting to the Wildcats’ penchant for resetting their offensive line before the snap and were whistled for eight encroachment penalties.
Moses Lake inched to within 18 points in the second half after Thomas’ punt return and a 30-yard scoring strike from Dominic Signorelli to Spencer Smith.
Moses Lake closes its nonleague stretch at home against Post Falls this Friday at 7 p.m.
Wahluke 3, Granger 0
MATTAWA — Alex Valdez’s leg was the difference in Wahluke’s 3-0 win against Granger.
Valdez hit from 42 yards out in the third quarter for the game’s lone score.
Wahluke’s defense limited Granger to one-of-nine on fourth down conversions.
Northwest Christian 34, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 13
SPOKANE — Northwest Christian erupted for a 27-point second quarter to beat Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 34-13.
