BONNERS FERRY — A quick start by visiting Riverside put the host Badgers in catch-up mode, and a late score wasn’t enough as the Rams earned a 28-8 nonconference win on Friday, Sept. 7.
Riverside scored early in the first quarter, added 2- and 20-yard TD runs in the second quarter and a 9-yard TD run in the third quarter to open a 28-0 lead. The Rams piled up 412 yards in the game, compared to 171 for Bonners Ferry.
“We made too many mental mistakes in the first half of what I thought should have been a very winnable game for us,” Badgers coach Cory Kramer said. “At the half we really didn’t make any significant adjustments — we just came out and at times played the way we were supposed to and won the second half.”
Bonners Ferry outscored Riverside 8-7 after intermission, with quarterback Aaron Scott dashing 11 yards for a touchdown with 2:20 remaining in the game. Scott threw to Ty Bateman for the two-point conversion.
Scott had 59 yards passing and 43 yards rushing for Bonners Ferry (0-3), while Donovan Varelman had 47 yards rushing on 13 carries.
“We are getting closer each week ... our roster keeps getting a little more depth, which will help,” Kramer said. “This week we play a pretty good Thompson Falls team that took us to overtime last year so it should be a good test for us to notch that first win of the season.”
The Badgers return to action Friday when they host Thompson Falls, Mont., at 7 p.m.
