SANDPOINT — The pace of driver’s license issuance in Bonner County remains glacial, according to Sheriff Daryl Wheeler.

In a post to Facebook on Wednesday, Wheeler said the entire state is still experiencing incredibly long delays and licensing offices in Sandpoint and Priest River are only able to operate one computer terminal at each location.

“We have only seen small improvements in the operating system this week, as the Idaho Transportation Department takes steps to create a functioning system,” Wheeler wrote.

Our wait time to process a driver’s license can take up to two and a half hours, Wheeler added.

“We apologize for these long delays. ITD has automatically extended the expiration date of your expiring and expired driver’s license and identification cards through Oct. 31, 2018. This does not apply to drivers whose privileges are currently withdrawn until reinstatement requirements are fulfilled,” Wheeler wrote.

The extension does not apply to drivers with Commercial Driver’s Licenses who do not have a legal presence document on file with the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles or CDL drivers with expired hazardous material endorsements.

The Sandpoint driver’s license office is open at 8:30 a.m. and will be closing at 4 p.m. Officials recommend drivers be in the office and through the line before 3 p.m. if they are testing.

The driver’s license office in Priest River is open. The office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If testing is needed, you must be in the office and through the line before 3 p.m.

“The Idaho Sheriff’s Association has met and continues to meet with the governor’s office to try to quickly resolve this problem. The sheriffs have their hands tied, as we have no control over the inadequate service ITD is providing to their citizens. Please be patient with our driver’s license employees, they too have no control over the long delays,” Wheeler said in the post’s conclusion.
