SANDPOINT — Colburn Industrial Park has a new addition as Wood's B.F. Redi-Mix recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art concrete plant.

"It opens up this whole Sandpoint, Clark Fork, Hope, Priest River, and Sagle market with the new plant," said Scott Wood, manager of Wood's Crushing and Hauling.

Prior to opening the new plant in Colburn, Wood's B.F. Redi-Mix operated solely out of Bonners Ferry. The company now operates out of both locations. Wood said while the company is known for paving, not many people know Wood's is in the concrete business as well.

"Very few people know that we even own the Bonners Ferry Redi-Mix," he said.

Wood's Crushing and Hauling, founded by Wood's father, Brian Wood,  started out 42 years ago with a dump truck and a front end loader. Brian Wood worked on a lot of Forest Service roads at the time, Scott Wood said. He built the business from there, getting into rock crushing a couple years later. He purchased four portable rock crushers that, in addition to Idaho, travel to Washington and Montana to perform projects for the Forest Service, states, cities and counties.

In 1998, Wood's opened an asphalt plant in Colburn. About the same time, Wood's purchased Bonners Ferry Redi-Mix and has operated the plant up there ever since.

For the recent opening of the new Redi-Mix plant, Wood said the original plan was to replace the Bonners Ferry plant with a brand new one. They bought the plant, Wood said, and had the parts in Bonners Ferry and ready to go. However, after mulling it over, they decided it would be money better spent to set it up in Colburn, next to the asphalt plant. Five new trucks were added as well.

Between Wood's Crushing and Hauling, the two Redi-Mix plants and the asphalt plant, Wood said the company has 60-65 employees.
