Sadie Sicilia hits Panida stage

SANDPOINT – Her concert posters are striking, atmospheric – dramatic, even. In person, Sadie Sicilia easily matches that vibe. No matter that she showed up for a coffee shop interview with her two small children in tow. The artist with raven hair, almost alarmingly intense eyes and drop-dead lipstick makes a statement on stage and off.
On Sat., Sept. 29, she will perform her second feature concert on the big stage at the Panida Theater. The first one, performed about 18 months ago, filled the place. This time around, she has upped the ante for herself and the audience, packing a huge expanse of musical styles and genres into the two-act show.
Act I will see Sadie Sicilia in the spotlight with pianist and musical collaborator Desiree, who brings a classical background to the singer’s rootsy proclivities.
“We play originals, jazzy, soul and bluesy stuff,” Sicilia said. “And the second half of the show is me and my full band, Sadie Sicilia & The Reckoning, playing funk and rock n’ roll with a focus on originals.”
It’s no accident that the concert is delineated in this fashion, as the young performer plans to use this genre-fluid platform as a launch pad for two, distinct artistic personalities.
“I can’t seem to pick a style and I have too much fun doing all of it to stick to one,” she said.
“No matter what your musical taste is, there’s something you’re going to like,” she added.
Those who don’t yet recognize her stage name might be surprised to learn they’ve quite likely watched her perform in the past, since Sadie has been onstage with her father, Mike Wagoner, for years singing covers and some of his originals. At venues such as Elkin’s Resort in Priest Lake and the Pend d’Oreille Winery in Sandpoint, the duo built a fan base that grew, in part, because of her knockout renditions of songs that included Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt classics.
She still loves the covers, but, about two years ago, made the call to branch out. Stepping away from the comfort of winning material sung by an act that had already proven popular and into a more exploratory chapter of artistic growth required a different kind of vehicle. And a new stage name seemed just the ticket.
Still, there is the question of whether stepping into this new persona was a gateway to freedom or the first step in having to push the rock of audience familiarity back up the hill.
“It’s both – and it’s terrifying,” Sicilia said. “It’s easy and freeing in that you’re finally accepting who you are, but you still have to be brave enough to get other people to accept that.”
While the trappings of a fresh stage role might be new ground, the act of performing is in her blood. Along with her dad, Sadie has her mother – a bass player and vocalist who goes by the stage name of Jenai and also provides the design work for those eye-catching posters – to thank for growing up around music and performing.
Her first memory of singing on stage comes from a road trip from Nashville to Priest River with her mom, when they listened to an earlier recording done by her parents along the way. One song caught the 7-year-old girl’s attention and, by the time she was back home in North Idaho, she announced that she was ready to spring it on an audience. Mike took her along to his Elkin’s gig that same night and she aced the number, to the delight of the crowd.
“You actually started earlier than that,” Jenai casually offered between corralling grandchildren so her daughter could focus on the interview. “You got on stage with us when you were three and sang ‘You Are My Sunshine.’ In a bar.”
The other memory her mother shared was that Sadie was always dancing. That element, to date, has not been shared with an audience. All that will change on Saturday night, when she adds choreography to this ever-outward expansion of an emerging young artist.
“I’m very theatrical,” she shared, leaning forward in her chair in an almost confidential manner. “But this will be the first time I’ve ever done choreography in a concert.”
Just as the singer-songwriter has managed to incorporate Desiree’s classical styling into things such as blues, her take on how the full band handles a song is just as creative. For years, rock n’ roll has been taking old standards and revving them up for new generations. Sadie believes those tables are just as easily turned and is more than happy to be the one doing the spinning.
“I feel like all music can tie together,” she said. “You can take a rock n’ roll song and make it a great jazz ballad.”
As mentioned, Act I of the concert will feature Desiree on piano and Sadie Sicilia on vocals, with Act II consisting of Terry Martin on drums, Jenai on bass, Reese Warren playing lead guitar, Chris Lynch on keyboards and Sicilia on vocals and guitar. The second act also will include an appearance by the Sandpoint High School choir, both with the full band and on an acapella number with the singer.
With a full complement of sound and lights, the performance is being filmed in a multi-camera shoot by Aric Spence of Sandpoint Filmmakers.
Tickets for the Sept. 29 concert at the Panida Theater are $15 adults, $12 students, available at Eichardt’s Pub, Beet & Basil, online at www.panida.org and at the box office on the night of the show (if available).
