The VFW Post No. 3596 and the Auxiliary are looking for youngsters to join in the latest national contest that is coming up.

“It’s all about taking pride in your country and showcasing your patriotism,” said Carol Harris of the Plains VFW Auxiliary.

School students from around the county are encouraged to take part. There are two divisions, depending on the grade students are in that they can enter.

“Whether you are a homeschool student or attend one of the schools in the county we hope kids join in on the contest,” said Harris.

The two contest categories for this year’s competition are “Why I Honor the American Flag” for those students in grades 6 through 8. Those in grades 9 through 12 write about, ‘Why My Vote Matters.”

“This contest is a great way to delve into history and see how it relates to you (kids) and how important it is to you,” said Harris.

The contest also boasts prizes that were sponsored by local businesses, and each division has its own sets of rules.

“We encourage the kids to read the rules, and be generic in their entires,” explained Harris. ”You aren’t allowed to be specific, so names should only be a first name and you aren’t allowed to mention a state. So one example we give is: ‘Grandpa Joe served back in the Vietnam War and ... etc,’ which is one way they can approach part of their entry.”

This is all part of a national contest and Harris said it would be great if we could have another Sanders County local reach the top level of the competition. “Look what Malachi was able to achieve, he really made many people proud and of course our local veterans as well.”

Students can hand in their entries to their English teachers, and Harris said they have until Oct. 31 to complete their entries.

“We really hope kids take part in the competition to not only take pride in their country, but show support to veterans who have served and live here in the county,” said Harris.
