Coeur d'Alene wins on emotional night

COEUR d’ALENE — After an emotional pre-match ceremony where many players brought cancer survivors to be honored, and another cancer survivor was an “honored guest,” the Coeur d’Alene Vikings overcame a first-set struggle to beat the Post Falls Trojans 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 on Thursday night in the annual “Volleyball 4 the Cure” match for cancer awareness.
Lauren Phillips had nine kills, nine assists, eight digs and two aces for Coeur d’Alene (11-4, 3-1 5A Inland Empire League). Taylin Rowley had 25 assists and 10 digs, Kelly Horning 14 kills, Sarah Wilkey 14 digs, Liliana Hare three blocks.
“It was a really cool atmosphere; it felt like Fight for the Fish,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We started finding our groove (after the first set); I thought we did really well on serve-receive.”
Tessa Sarff had 14 kills and four blocks for Post Falls (9-9, 1-3). Kayla Mayo had 21 assists, Courtney Finney 20 assists, Ali Carpenter 20 digs, Megan Wood three aces, Rylee Hartwig and Maddy John three blocks each.
“That first set we started on fire; it was the kind of volleyball we like to see,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Then Coeur d’Alene came back at us. We played some stellar defense — they were pounding, and we were digging. Our serve-receive kinda struggled; we couldn’t get into system.”
Both teams begin play tonight at the Sheridan Volleyball Classic in Spokane.

Lakeland
RATHDRUM — The host Hawks battled back to win the third and fourth sets to force a deciding set, but the Titans won that won 15-8 to finish off a 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8 nonleague victory at Hawk Court.
Daphne Carroll had 22 kills and five aces for Lakeland (13-8), Katy Ryan added 16 kills and three aces, Abbey Neff 31 assists, Olivia Cooper 27 digs, Jenny Wirtz seven blocks, Summer Powell 10 digs and five aces, Sarah Pope three blocks.
Lakeland begins play tonight at the Sheridan Volleyball Classic in Spokane.

Cd’A Charter
SPIRIT LAKE — McKeeley Tonkin had four kills, 15 assists and seven aces as the host Tigers swept the Panthers 25-16, 25-12, 25-23 in Intermountain League play.
Kenzie Dean had 11 kills, five digs and three aces for Timberlake (15-4, 5-0 IML), and Becca Malloy had 13 digs.
Megan MacKinney had four aces and five assists for Coeur d’Alene Charter (6-6, 0-5). Halle Jereczek and Chloe Turnbull had two kills each.
Timberlake plays in the Sheridan Volleyball Classic today and Saturday in Spokane.
Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.

HARRISON FLATS — The visiting Miners improved to 4-2 in the North Star League, sweeping the Warriors 25-18, 25-11, 25-10.
Amanda Wine had six kills and two blocks for Kootenai (2-8, 1-5 NSL). Hannah Andersen had two kills, three blocks and six service points, Tayva Maitland two kills and six service points, Bella Defoort six service points.
Kootenai travels to Mullan on Tuesday.

SPANGLE, Wash. — Kaylee Prosch had 14 assists and five aces as the visiting Royals beat Upper Columbia Academy 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18 in a nonleague match.
Julia Haag had six kills for North Idaho Christian (4-5), which plays host to Flathead Valley Home School Association of Kalispell, Mont., tonight at 7:45 at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene.
