April 2, 1969 — S/SGT ALLEN ASSIGNED

Staff Sergeant Everett R. Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Allen, 740 Larch St., has arrived for duty at Loring AFB, Maine. Sgt. Allen, who previously served at Udorn Royal Tahi AFB, Thailand, is a fuels specialist assigned to a unit of the Strategic Air Command.

The sergeant is a graduate of Sandpoint Senior High School. His wife, Elizabeth, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Allen, Sandpoint.

KIWANIS OPPOSES INTERPRETATION

A recent Smothers Brothers episode brought angry response from Sandpoint Kiwanis Club.

Member Lou Oestmann watched Sunday’s show and was very displeased that the Pledge of Allegiance given by a group of young people didn’t include the words, “under God.” He felt the club, which is dedicated to the support of religion and churches, should protest misuse of the pledge to the Columbia Broadcasting System and show sponsors.

With the call of the question, a voice vote was affirmative, loud, immediate and without opposition. President Bob Klatt will have a letter prepared this week.

April 2, 1919 — “SCOOP” COMING HOME

According to word received by his parents, “Scoop” Shutz, the Review’s war correspondent during the late unpleasantness in Europe, is leaving for home. He wrote that he was leaving base hospital for post hospital and the next move would be to the grand old U.S.A.

CANTEEN SERVED OVER 20,000

In a report to the Red Cross chapter’s executive board, Mrs. Helphrey listed supplies the local canteen has furnished soldiers and sailors going through on the trains; 1050 magazines, 46 dozen sandwiches, 19 pounds homemade candy, 275 boxes of apples, 21 gallons coffee, 430 gallons buttermilk, 61 gallons ice cream, 72 cartons gum, 16,800 postal cards, 43 homemade cakes, 341 dozen doughnuts, 38,850 cigarettes, 5600 match packages, 293 box lunches, four dozen oranges, 33 dozen chocolate bars, 500 Christmas boxes.

There have been 17,411 soldiers, 2,795 sailors, 52 marines, and 121 drafted men served.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES

Tuesday was kid day for the seniors. They became about 8 years old for that day, and everywhere one looked could be seen girls carrying dolls and chewing gum and boys dressed in knickerbockers.
