April 9, 1969 – ALLEY PICKUP RESUMED

As of Monday, garbage is again being picked up in alleys throughout the city. Alley collection had been discontinued mid-January due to the heavy snowfall clogging alleys. Cecil Ereman has the contract with the city for garbage disposal.

APRIL FOOLS’ DAY EARTHQUAKE

Two earthquakes struck the Emerald Empire on April Fools’ Day, at 8:45 a.m. and 9:06 a.m.

Leonard Sevier, at the Pacific Finance Co. office on First, noticed what was likely the second of the two quakes. He said the drapes began shaking, potted plants rattled and loose coat hangers set up a clatter. He said the quake must have lasted eight or nine seconds.

Judge Dar Cogswell felt it on the Bonner county Courthouse second floor. It was felt with more strength by teachers on the second floor of Old Farmin school. Some of the school administration staff in the McFarland building also felt or heard the building creak.

RIESE LEASES TEXACO STATION

Harold Riese took over operation of Jack’s Texaco on April 1. The station at Fifth and Cedar had been operated by Jack Dewey for himself and Ross Payne. After returning from a 3-week Texaco management course, Riese will begin 24-hour service at the station.

PAY WATER BILLS OR GO THIRSTY

The city council adopted a policy allowing water consumers only thirty days grace on unpaid bills. Water department customers who are more than a month in arrears will have to go thirsty until the bill is paid. Outstanding water bills amount to less than $400, but the councilmen feel that, with rates as low as they are and the city still in debt for the plant, there should be no delinquencies.

WENDLE ON SANITARIA BOARD

Dr. Floyd G. Wendle has accepted a place on the commission that is to decide the location of the tuberculosis sanitaria authorized by the legislature. One sanitarium will be located in the southern and one in the northern part of the state.

NEWS FROM BRONX

Lost - a wagon road leading from Sandpoint to Colburn. Any person finding same please report at once and receive a liberal reward.

Mrs. A.V. Bopp of Sandpoint visited at the Dunnigan home Sunday.

Miss Margaret Kemp, who attends high school at Sandpoint, spent the weekend with home folks.
