Eureka, Whitefish students take first in Duck Stamp Contest

Christy Wilson of Eureka received first place in the seventh- through ninth-grade division for the state Junior Duck Stamp Contest.

Avrye Smith of Eureka received a first-place ribbon in the fourth- through sixth-grade division of the state Junior Duck Stamp Contest.

Eureka and Whitefish students received first place in their age divisions for the Montana Junior Duck Stamp Contest.

Thirty-five native species of waterfowl were depicted across 92 entries from grades three through 12 for the competition organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Two Eureka students earned first-place ribbons for their artwork, including Avrye Smith in the fourth- through sixth-grade division and Christy Wilson for grades seven through nine.

Whitefish High School student Jade Greenberg received a first-place ribbon in the 10th- through 12th-grade division with her oil painting depicting a male and female mallard pair, while Jackson Hall of Eureka placed second.

The Junior Duck Stamp Program encourages youth to use art and science to learn about waterfowl and habitat needs.

An awards ceremony is scheduled May 11 at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge amphitheater in Stevensville.

Climate change awards announced

Climate Smart Glacier Country announced its Climate Smart Champions during a ceremony at the Earth Day celebration April 21 in Whitefish. Awards were presented to businesses, youth and an individual who are leaders in building local solutions to climate change challenges.
