Exercise muscles against mussels
Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 years, 11 months AGO
Flex a few leg muscles during upcoming mussel walks along Flathead Lake and learn how to identify the aquatic invasive species and how to prevent their destructive establishment in the lake.
The walks will be hosted by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the Flathead Lakers, the Flathead Lake Biological Station and Montana State Parks.
The 2019 Flathead Lake Mussel Walks will be:
May 1 - Flathead Lake State Park: West Shore Unit, Lakeside
May 2 - Flathead Lake Biological Station, Yellow Bay
May 3 - Salish Point, Polson
May 17 - Flathead Lake State Park: Wayfarers Unit, Bigfork
May 24 - Whitefish City Beach
Each community mussel walk will begin at 9 a.m. with educational activities and a mussel-detecting dog demonstration, followed by the mussel walk and beach cleanup.
The walks are open to the public, and local middle school students will be in attendance. Each walk should conclude no later than 11 am.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Flathead Lakers encourage residents to learn how to inspect shorelines and docks for potential mussels infestation.
