The sounds of drumming and singing came from the North end of the reservation this past weekend as the Standing Arrow Powwow celebration filled the powwow grounds in Elmo.

It was another occasion for tribal members from many tribal nations to come together to socialize and enjoy the spiritual essence of the dancing.

Some of the regalia worn by the dancers was traditional — buckskin and beading, feather bustles, fans, hats and headdresses — while others wore brightly colored clothing and headgear.

The kids and young people danced energetically while the older folks rounded the dance area more softly and peacefully. Many families danced together while friends caught up with one another as they stepped to the rhythm of the drums. The joy of the celebration was evident in many faces while others had an expression of peaceful tranquility.

Outside the dancing pavilion vendors sold food and various items and those who were not currently dancing or participating in stick games enjoyed moments of rest and serenity while listening to the singing emanating from the dance area.
