Vibrant fabric and patterns lined Superior High School at the Cabin Fever Quilt Guild quilt show at the 2019 Mineral County Fair this past weekend.

Cabin Fever President Susan Charles won Best in Show for a 500,000-stitch quilt she made for her grandson who achieved an Eagle Scout rank.

“My grandson is leading a crew of eight boys, so the quilt has eight hikers,” she said.

She stitched the eight Eagle Scouts that he led at the Philmont Scout Range in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in northern New Mexico. The tan sections convey the different parts of Scout Law.

Featured Quilter Peggy Temple showcased several of her quilts this year, including the one on her bed. Once she hung it up for the show, she realized there was a mistake in it.

“After all those years of it being on my bed, I looked up and realized there’s a mistake,” Temple said.

She says when the Amish quilt, they say you have to have at least one mistake in your quilt, so she calls it her Amish mistake.

Temple won a “People’s Choice” ribbon in the Small Wall hanging category and another ribbon in the Guild Sponsored Class category.

Temple says she is honored to be this year’s featured quilter and she spent around 20 hours a week quilting leading up to the show.

“I was just surprised when they asked me because there’s so many gals that have been doing this so much longer than me,” Temple said. “It was quite an honor.”
