Sandpoint local Demi Driggs capped off a string of top-three finishes on the Idaho Junior Golf Tour circuit by placing second at the District Championships, held at the Twin Lakes Golf Course from July 22-23.

Driggs shot a 108 — with a 52 and a 56 — during the two-day, 18-hole competition.

Driggs’ summer golf schedule has been a busy one.

Playing in the Northern District of the Idaho Golf Association’s Junior Tour, the girls in the 10 to 12-year-old age division challenged her throughout the season. While there weren’t many golfers in that age group, the level of parity within the circuit was considerable; there were four different winners on the circuit but only two repeats. To stand out at that age — not to mention putting in the effort to excel at a technical sport — is a feat in and of itself.

And Driggs undoubtedly excelled.

She finished in the top three in five of her last six events. She placed first at Coeur d’ Alene Public, along with second-place finishes at both The Links and Stoneridge, along with a third-place at Bryden Canyon.

Driggs also earned a first-place ribbon in the driving portion of this year’s Drive, Chip and Putt competition, held at the Creek at Qualchan.

Driggs wasn’t the only Sandpoint local with a successful summer. First-time golfer Alexa Tuinstra played with Driggs in the same age group, and improved by nearly 20 strokes over the course of the summer. Tuinstra managed to lower her average from 86 strokes down to the mid 60.
