SANDPOINT — A Bonner County Jail inmate is facing a heroin trafficking charge for smuggling 75 grams of black tar into the facility earlier this month.

In addition to the felony trafficking charge, Eternity Dawn Bottenfield is charged with delivery of a controlled substance, introducing contraband into a correctional facility and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bottenfield, 32, appeared in court on Aug. 2, the same day she was to be sentenced in 1st District Court for drug-possession charges dating back to June 2018.

A preliminary hearing on the new charges is set for Wednesday in Bonner County Magistrate Court.

Sheriff’s deputies and Sandpoint Police investigated after the heroin was found in one of jail’s dorms. One inmate told investigators she saw Bottenfield remove a plastic bag of the drug from an orifice, according to a probable cause affidavit. Bottenfield was seen using the drug with other inmates or using to barter for personal care items, the affidavit said.

Surveillance camera footage showed Bottenfield handing the drugs to another inmate at one point, according to the affidavit.

Bottenfield was on conditional release while her case was pending, but failed to appear at her sentencing hearing earlier this year and became the subject of a $40,000 arrest warrant, court records show. She was arrested in Spokane County on July 17 and transferred to Bonner County on July 22.
