POST FALLS — Fire caused an estimated $70,000 worth of structural damage to a Post Falls home on Thursday morning.

The cause is under investigation. The fire is thought to have started in the house’s garage, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Division Chief Steve Isaacson said.

"The fire is not suspicious, but it appears that something happened quickly in the garage," he said.

The fire at 3600 Jordan Drive, north of Mullan Avenue and west of Highway 41, was reported by neighbors at 10:56 a.m. and the first crews arrived 2 minutes later to flames rising from the garage. Firefighters remained on scene until about 3:30 p.m.

"If this fire would have been in the county, it would have been a different outcome," Isaacson said.

The fire also destroyed a minivan.

One of the two occupants of the single-story home suffered a minor burn but was not transported to the hospital.

"The occupants were both encouraged to get out of the home by the neighbors," Isaacson said.

Firefighters attacked the fire through the front door to prevent the fire from spreading farther into the home.

Isaacson said the homeowners' insurance investigator will determine the cause.

The occupants were displaced and are staying with family.
