WALLACE — One of Wallace’s most recognizable homes went up in flames on Friday when a fire broke out in the attic of the historic White/Magnuson house.

The home, located on the corner of Cedar and Third streets, caught fire around 3 p.m. when emergency crews from Shoshone County Fire districts 1 and 2 responded, along with the Mullan Volunteer Fire Department.

As the air filled with smoke, so too did the surrounding streets of Wallace as bystanders flocked to snap photos or even shed tears as they watched the beloved home burn.

While EMS crews fought the fire, deputies from the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office jumped in to do everything from crowd control, to even a little firefighting, as crews desperately worked to keep the fire from spreading to any of the neighboring homes.

Jeremy Groves, a captain with the SCSO, found his way onto a hose on the east side of the home and spent a good half hour battling flames coming through the roof.

“I see these guys out here working and getting tired,” Groves said. “They would get a spot under control and go to take a quick break and then the fire comes back on them. I just wanted to give them a hand any way I could.”

Sheriff Mike Gunderson even commandeered a Genie Lift that was on site to help the firefighters get an upper hand on the third-floor blaze.

The lift Gunderson utilized was there as part of a roofing project that was going on at the residence at the time of fire.

While the official cause of ignition is unknown at this time, it may be related to the roofing work being conducted prior to the incident.

EMS crews were able to go into the bottom floor of the historic residence to retrieve various items while other crews continued to battle the flames on the higher floors.

It is not believed anyone was injured as a result of the incident.

Fire officials were not available to speak with before press time.
