OLDTOWN — A vehicle with a missing catalytic converter led to the discovery of a stolen gun and drugs during a traffic stop on Highway 41 on Thursday.
Kolten Andrew Dean Smith is charged with grand theft, in addition to possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Friday.
Judge Tera Harden set Smith’s bail at $10,000 and appointed a public defender to represent him, court records show.
The excessive and strange noise emitting from Smith’s vehicle attracted the attention of a sheriff’s deputy who was conducting stationary patrol on Highway 41 and Old Priest River Road. The deputy stopped the vehicle and saw marijuana products were plainly visible, which lead to a search of the vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.
A Springfield Armory subcompact semiautomatic pistol stolen in Stevens County, Wash., was recovered during the search, as was the marijuana, a meth pipe, THC oil and ammunition for a .357-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol.
Smith, a 20-year-old Fruitland, Wash., resident has multiple prior felonies in Washington, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Aug. 28.
