SANDPOINT — A Sagle man awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge pleaded guilty Monday to lying to police officers.
Michael Ryan McDermott was sentenced to 150 days in jail, although he was given credit for time served at the Bonner County Jail while awaiting trial on the murder charge.
McDermott attempted to pass himself off as someone else when Sandpoint Police contacted him at Evergreen Towing on March 16, but the ruse was unsuccessful after officers identified him using a tattoo, according to court documents.
McDermott is accused of shooting Robert Cameroen Hegseth Wohali in the chest on March 14 or 15, although he would not be formally linked to the killing until a grand jury indicted him in April.
Hegseth Wohali was listed as a missing person with Idaho State Police at the time of McDermott’s arrest. Acting on a tip, investigators discovered the body of Hegseth Wohali, 26, at an undisclosed location south of town a few days after the killing.
Hegseth Wohali, according to posts to social media, may have been attempting to recover a Chevrolet Camaro from a former girlfriend around the time of his death.
McDermott, 47, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, in addition a charge of failing to notify authorities of a death.
McDermott is being held at the Bonner County Jail with bail set at $500,000. A jury trial in the case is planned for September in 1st District Court.
If convicted of second-degree murder, McDermott faces 10 years to life in prison. The failure to notify of a death is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, according to Idaho Code.
