Officials with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a potential homicide that occurred in Rexford on Saturday, according to a press release from Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies, officers from the Eureka Police Department and Montana Fish and Game responded to a report that Dennis Stacy, 59, had died from an apparent gunshot wound at 215 Stacy Hollow Drive.

Following the incident, Justin Brewer was arrested on suspicion of mitigated deliberate homicide, but has since been released, due to “information discovered during the investigation raising the question of whether his [Brewer’s] use of force [toward Stacy] was justified,” according to the press release.

The Lincoln County Attorney’s Office will determine if it is appropriate to convene a coroner’s inquest, which is a public process, to determine the “appropriate action moving forward.”

The investigation is ongoing.
