SANDPOINT — By the time the final line was cast and fish pulled in, it was Denton McGlothlin and Becky Sturgis who walked away with the top prizes in the 2019 Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s Thanksgiving Derby.

McGlothlin, a Sagle resident, caught his 23.68-pound, 36 1/2-inch rainbow trout to claim top honors in the adult rainbow division. Becky Sturgis of Coeur d’Alene grabbed the top spot in the adult Mackinaw division with the 17.58-pound Mackinaw measuring 37 inches caught on opening day that never lost her spot.

The standings will be finalized after the fish verification today, according to LPOIC board member Dave Gillespie in an email.

In second place in the rainbow division is John Ross of Hope with a 23.02-pound, 35-inch fish, followed by Dale Greene of Sandpoint, who caught his way onto the leaderboard on the derby’s final day with a 22.46-pound, 36 1/2-inch rainbow. Jan Deife of Ritzville, Wash., landing a 20.76-pound, 34-inch rainbow to claim fourth place.

In the Mackinaw division, Roger Blackstone of Coeur d’Alene caught a 12.6-pound, 32-inch fish to claim second place; in third is Coeur d’Alene’s Don Houk, who caught an 11.22-pound, 29-inch Mack on Monday, followed by Brad Sturgis who hooked a 9.58-pound, 29-inch Mack on the derby’s final day to claim fourth place. In fifth after Sunday’s action is Art Webb with a 9.40-pound, 30-inch fish, sixth is Leo Wolf with a 6.84-, 27 3/4-inch Mack, Dale Greene with a 4.66-pound, 25-inch fish is seventh, and Kenny Breeden with a 3.33-pound, 21-inch Mack is eighth. Ninth in the division is Matt Melton with a 3.18-pound, 21 1/4-inch Mackinaw, followed by Tom Joyner in tenth with a 2.72-pound, 20-inch fish.

While there were no entries in the Youth A division, in the Youth B division, Lauren Porter claimed the top spot with an 18.18-pound, 32-inch rainbow. In second place is Madison Shaw Clary, who caught a 13.9-pound, 28 3/4-inch rainbow. Claiming third spot on the list is Jessa Johnson, who caught a 7.68, 26-inch rainbow.

There were also no entries yet in the junior rainbow and junior Mackinaw divisions.

Over $10,000 in cash and prize money were for grabs during the derby, which wrapped up Sunday, Dec. 1. First place in the adult rainbow trout division is worth $2,000, while the awards for second, third and fourth places are $1,000, $750 and $500, respectively. The top adult finisher in the lake trout division stands to win $1,000. Second-, third- and fourth-place finishers win $500, $300 and $200, respectively. Adults who finish in fifth to 10th place in the lake trout division win $100.
