SPIRIT LAKE — A 44-year-old woman involved in the Nov. 24 crash on the Spirit Lake Cutoff Road that resulted in the death of her husband and 8-year-old daughter said road conditions were instrumental in the fatality.

Dawn M. Hampton, 39, of Spirit Lake, said weather conditions and ice on the road caused the fatal crash at 11:30 a.m. that Sunday, about six miles north of Spirit Lake.

“We have been in contact with multiple first responders along with the flight crew of Life Flight and they all stated the road conditions were the worst they have seen,” Hampton told The Press. “The fire truck literally almost slid into the ambulance. First responders couldn’t stand upright without sliding. The pilot of the helicopter had a difficult time landing.”

Hampton said misconceptions have surrounded the crash that resulted in the death of her husband and daughter.

“My husband didn’t just cross the center line,” Hampton said. “He hit black ice and the vehicle slid across the road.”

John W. Hampton, 50, of Spirit Lake died in the crash with 8-year-old daughter Emily Hampton.

Dawn and her 5-year-old daughter were not seriously injured in the crash, she said. They were treated and released from Kootenai Health.

Idaho State Police said John Hampton and three passengers were traveling north in a red 2016 Chevy Traverse SUV when Hampton’s vehicle drifted over the center line while negotiating a curve.

Hampton’s SUV struck a red, 2004 Ford truck driven by Josiah N. Thompson, 44, of Spirit Lake, troopers said. The SUV careened into the northbound ditch and overturned while Thompson’s truck came to rest in the road. Thompson sustained no injuries.

Emily was flown via Life Flight to Sacred Heart, where she died. John Hamption died at the scene.

Dawn Hampton said her daughter was an organ donor.

“Her legacy will live on through organ donation and all the lives impacted,” she said Tuesday.

Services will be Saturday at the Priest River Events Center.
